Arctic Sweet Coltsfoot

picture of arctic sweet coltsfoot flowers

Arctic Sweet Coltsfoot (Petasites frigidus) are small flowering plants in the aster family.

They are common throughout Alaska and Canada, with a southern range extending to most of the states bordering Canada.

Petasites have a long history of medicinal use, however, recent research shows that the plants contain a toxic substance that can damage the liver.

Ingesting the plant is not recommended, however, scientists are discovering ways to extract the plant's beneficial elements while filtering out its toxic elements.

Petasites frigidus is the only native petasites species found in the United States. The flowers are an interesting mix of small purple and white petals that grow in clusters. Depending on location, they begin blooming as early as February.
