An Inconvient Truth
Call it a creeping success. The modern wave of environment movies may have started with the 1979 blockbuster "China Syndrome, followed by the 1983 Meryl Streep blockbuster Silkwood. It's a tough call.

What's not tough to see is the many recent films that have sported environment themes. For example, during the past decade, three of Hollywood's big box office draws, Julia Roberts, John Travolta and Steven Seagal, created silver screen sized portraits of modern day Americans battling the corporate polluter. Julia Roberts also won an Academy Award for best Actress for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich.

The environment also has played a supporting role in countless movies. You might start with the Michael Douglas 1995 film The American President, with Annette Benning lobbying the President to do something about climate change. Who can forget the critical role the Ents played in the recent Lord of the Rings trilogy?

Hollywood's next big blockbuster, The Day After Tomorrow is an apocolyptic view of the future based on a dooms day climate change scenario.

The environment trend in movies is certain to continue. The degree to which the environment stays front and center ultimately depends on how well it sells. As the well worn saying goes, "the color of Hollywood is green".
