The big ears of the Fennec Fox (Vulpes Zerda) belie the fact that it ranks as the world's smallest canid species.
The over sized ears help them regulate their body temperature in the native North African habitat, which includes parts of the Sahara desert.
Perhaps the harsh environmental conditions encouraged Fennecs to live in small communities rather than the traditional single family life style of most fox species.
Their diet consists of small rodents, lizards, insects, plants and fruits in their territory.
