Dhole

picture of a dhole or Asian wild dog

The Dhole or Asiatic Wild Dog (Cuon alpinus) is the only member of the Cuon genus, and one of two Asian wild dog or wolf species.

While they once ranged throughout most of the Asian continent, like many of the large canid species, human led efforts to eradicate them from settled areas caused severe population declines.

Today, discrete populations live in a variety of forested habitats across the Asian continent (see Range Map).

The IUCN now lists the Dhole as an endangered species with both habitat loss and loss of prey accounting for most of the population declines.

They exhibit pack behavior, including group hunting. The picture highlights the animal's red fur.
