Maned Wolf

picture of a maned wolf

The Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is a medium sized canid that inhabits the grasslands of southern South America.

They are omnivores, with a diet consisting of small mammals and fruits within their territory. Because much of their original range has been transformed into farm land, small farm animals such as chickens also catch their eyes.

Human encroachment in their native range has also placed stress on their population levels. The IUCN lists them as a Near Threatened species.

The picture highlights the wolf's unusually long legs. The legs, along with the long hair, gives the Maned Wolf an appearance of a cross between a fox and a wolf. Their inclination against traditional wolf pack behavior also speaks to their fox side.
