Bush Dog

picture of a bush dog

The Bush Dog (Speothos venaticus), a wild dog of South America, inhabits forests and fields from Panama, south to Argentina.

The IUCN lists them as Near Threatened because their habitat continues to decline. Their current disconnected habitat makes it difficult for natural breeding and maintenance of healthy populations.

While they display the pack-like behavior typical of many canidae species, they are also known as good swimmers.

Indicative of their, to date, lack of status in the animal research world, little reliable information exists regarding their behavioral habits, including diet and breeding.

The picture shows a head shot of the short haired and short-eared dog.
