The Pygmy Right Whale (Caperea marginata), the only species in the Neobalaenidae family of baleen whales, is also the smallest, measuring between sixteen and twenty feet in length.
Little is known about the species, with the exception that it inhabits the Southern Hemisphere oceans north of the Antarctic Ocean.
The Australian Government keeps records of sightings and strandings, producing most of the known research on the species.
The Tasmanian Government reports the Pygmy Whale to be the most common stranded whale species found along the Island's coastal areas (see also Sightings and Strandings of Pygmy Right Whale).
