Situated mostly in northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon makes many natural wonders of the world lists.
Its story, told many times over, starts about six million years ago, when the Colorado River worked its way to the Pacific Ocean, eroding the land areas in its path.
Today the Grand Canyon measures some 277 miles long, 18 miles wide in some places, and 5000 feet deep.
The size and location of the Grand Canyon means it occupies a variety of habitats from forests to deserts to riparian areas. It's not only a natural wonder, but also a wildlife wonder and home to 355 species of birds, 89 species of mammals and 56 species of amphibians and reptiles.
